Portsmouth HarbourPortsmouth is located in the county of Hampshire on the South Coast of the UK and is on the Island of Portsea, making it England’s only island city. Home to the Royal Navy, Portsmouth has been a significant naval port for centuries. It houses Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, HMS Warrior as well as the world’s oldest dry dock.

Although smaller than its heyday, the naval basis remains a major base and dockyard for both the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos. It also has a thriving ferry port with passenger and freight destinations to many parts of the continent.

The City itself has a population of 197,000 people crammed onto the Portsea Island, making it the densest city in the UK. The wider conurbation is a major business hub with a population of 442,252 residents and stretches from Southampton to Havant. The conurbation includes Fareham, Portchester, Gosport, Havant, Leigh Park, Stubbington, Waterlooville and Lee-on-the-solent.

Both the City and Portsmouth Football Club are nicknamed Pompey which dates back to the shipping logs with “Pom. P.” entries; which were shorthand for Portsmouth Point on the Navigational Charts.

Recently, the skyline was considerably enhanced with the construction of the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays, a bustling and vibrant shopping centre with a wide range of retail outlets, clubs and restaurants.
